Digital Media and Film: The Impacts of the Internet on Cinema

It has been established that music has been greatly influenced by the rise of digital media, however, it is not the only industry the internet has influenced. Cinema is rapidly evolving, and it seems the film industry is experiencing the same rapid changes as music is.

First, there is the issue of streaming. Movie streaming websites such as Netflix are becoming increasingly popular, rendering video rental stores redundant. In one year, from 2010 - 2011, subscriptions to Netflix increased by 66%. In 2011, members spent 2.4 billion hours watching streamed Netflix videos. If these figures keep rising, and Netflix gets more money on the system, then physical DVD sales will start to go the way of the CD.

DVD sales are still going strong, however, with the Avengers gaining $35,412,164 profit from its physical media alone. BUT, streaming is slowly taking over, as shown by this infographic below, sourced from Online Degrees.

Evolution of Music: The impact of Digital on the Music Industry

Check out our data visualization blog.

The Most Popular Downloads in a Sea of 97 Million

According to MusicHype CEO, Kevin King there are approximately 97 million songs in the world (recorded in the Gracenote database), and counting (Marsband.com). Such a vast array may not be so startling when we imagine the place that holds quite possibly all of these items; the infinite, ‘one stop culture shop’ that is the World Wide Web. For our usage and abusage there is a comprehensive range of music downloading sites from the well-loved iTunes to the seemingly controversial Napster. The choice is yours –although we advise the legal route. On top of this, however, is the next crucial decision –what to add to our playlists.

When in doubt more than a fair few of us have had a mainstream wander through Billboard’s hot 100 for the most popularly downloaded songs in hope of finding something we might like. Perhaps we have even ventured to browse through Youtube’s highest trending music videos and have fostered an addiction to PSY’s ‘GAGNAM STYLE’ (click this here to see an infographic on how it went viral). Whatever digital media insight webpage we may be on is where data is playing an integral role in shaping the ever-changing music industry.  They are particularly handy for all us downloader’s. For the latest top 20 favoured artists from iTunes, please see the info-graphic below.

Although it's unlikely, but if you haven't seen and heard it yet, here is the number 1 downloaded song on iTunes in the past 24 hours with 45,285 downloads in that space of time, PSY's GANGNAM STYLE.
